In alphabetical order, the following residents were elected to serve on the Sumner Grove HOA, on February 20, 2006: Helen Henderson: Vice President In alphabetical order, the following residents were elected to serve on the Architectural Review Committee: Teri Bridges - 8904 Sumner Grove Dr. Tel: 301 210 9934 Email twbridges@juno.com Donald Finlayson, 8810 Sumner Grove Dr., Tel: 301 210 4442 Email don.tav@comcast.net Chris Henderson, 8919 Sumner Grove Dr., Tel: 301 210 4636 Email chhe@erols.com Adrienne Keys, Email: atunstall@comcast.net Dianne Thompson, 8807 Sumner Grove Dr., Tel: 301 210 2711 Email: ginagizmo2000@yahoo.com TOPTeri Bridges • Personal: I am a native Washingtonian. My husband, daughters, and I have lived in Sumner Grove since 1999. I have a Master's Degree in Audiology from the University of Maryland, and am currently pursuing my Master's in Health Care Administration/MBA. Professionally, I am Director of the Hearing and Speech Center at Washington Hospital Center in DC where I have worked for 11 years. I serve on several professional association and hospital boards and committees. During my "non-working" hours, I enjoy yoga, pilates, and spending time with my family. I am an active volunteer at my daughters' school where I am on the board of the Home and School Association. • Candidacy: I have been a volunteer member of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) for our community since its inception. As a member of the ARC over the past few years, I have demonstrated my commitment to our community by honoring homeowners' requests for improvements, while upholding the covenants set forth by the HOA. I will work diligently for our homeowners' interests, while ensuring a continued sense of community. Teri Wilson-Bridges, 8904 Sumner Grove Dr., 301-210-9934, twbridges@juno.com TOPAnthony Dorsey • Personal: Currently a Professional Representative II of a major pharmaceutical company - Presently Co-owner of "The Dorsey Group," a group of contractors for several government agencies handling EEO litigation - Former owner of a cosmetology company - Former sales manager of an Internet Service Provider (DIGEX) for medium to large businesses - Former Major Accounts Manager with Intermedia, MCI Worldcom, and Allegiance handling the Mid-Atlantic - Graduate of University of Maryland at College Park with a degree in Business Systems Management in 1989 - Born in Connecticut • Candidacy: Even though I have missed some of the earlier HOA meetings because of some other obligations, this is the community in which I live and having input on the decisions to be made in the community is extremely important and time must be allotted for these decisions. I bring to this organization a background in sales, sales management and business management. My thoughts are to see which positions are a good fit for my background and help accordingly. Anthony C. Dorsey, 11200 Hickory Grove Court, Laurel, MD 20708, 301.210-5552, adorsey@sumnergrove.org TOPHelen Henderson • Personal: I moved to Sumner Grove in September 2000 with my husband, Chris. We have a 2 year old son and together with Chris' older son and daughter we are the Henderson family. I was born and raised in England but came to the States almost 8 years ago. Before moving here I worked for the British Diplomatic Service for 13 years and lived in 6 different countries in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. I now work in DC for the European Commission as a Grants Officer, and work closely with Universities around the U.S. • Candidacy: Chris and I have been involved in Home Owner Liaison with Magruder since we arrived in the neighborhood and I am a member of the Maryland Homeowners' Association. You could say we have a history with Magruder both on our individual home and on the neighborhood in general; we attended and spoke at the planning meeting for Phase II at the County Court and have been a thorn in Magruder's side ever since! We have many contacts in Prince George's County, especially our good friend Tom Dernoga, who many of you know as Councilman for District 1 and who is now also the Chairman of PG County. It is through our direct link to the highest levels in the County that our community voice has been heard on many issues with the Magruder Companies. • By voting 'Henderson' you will get "two for the price of one". Chris has served on the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) for several years now and we both take our home and neighborhood very seriously, so you will be getting a family committed to making our larger neighborhood family a happy, safe and desirable place to live. Helen Henderson, 8919 Sumner Grove Drive, Laurel, MD 20708, 301.210.4636, chhe@erols.com TOPEva KahiczekLove • Personal: Native Marylander and raised in Prince George's County. My husband, Jon, and I moved to Sumner Grove in Sept. 2005 after living in Baltimore City for the last decade. By profession I am a Pediatrician and work in a Peds Emergency Room at Franklin Square Hospital. Additionally, I am involved in the international medical community and have done work in Brazil and Uganda. When not in the ER, I enjoy running (and am doing my first marathon this year!), spending time with our newest arrival (our 4 month old son, Andrzej), gardening, and photography. • Candidacy: While I am a relative newcomer to Sumner Grove, I am firmly committed to building and strengthening our community. Throughout my life, I have strived to support the infrastructure of the community in which I live, whether it be locally or internationally, and have repeatedly dedicated myself to that end. I hope to bring my experiences from the past to strengthen our community's future and help shape the path of things to come. Eva Kahiczek-Love, 9209 Sumner Grove Drive, Laurel, MD 20708, 301.210.6339, evkubicz@gmail.com TOPGlenn White • Personal: Personal: Born in Pennsylvania, I first came to the metro DC area in the early 60's as an anti-war protester. Until two years ago I was a widower with a now 19yo daughter. At that time I remarried and my wife Thedra and I sold our separate homes and purchased a house here in Sumner Grove. I work as a network engineer at a multistate government agency. I am a graduate student in Computer Information systems at Missouri State University, an associate member of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations, and server on the Scholarship Ministry of my church. My personal interests include Brazilian culture and photography. • Candidacy: I believe residents empower home owner associations. Without buy-in and engagement from homeowners, HOAs function as mere administrative and legal instruments. Such is the norm, and most HOAs operate as essentially redundant adjuncts to the property management companies they hire. This works well enough in Beverly Hills, The Hamptons or Potomac, where multi-million housing prices, political clout and privately contracted services pretty much isolate these communities from the challenges of crime, speeding, dumping or zoning conflicts.
Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your perspective, home prices and circumstance here at Sumner Grove aren't yet on par with these up-market communities. I'm interested to serve on the HOA because of the obvious stake I share with every homeowner in this community, but also because of this concern that the new Sumner Grove HOA be empowered by residents, and be relevant to them. I believe my involvement will help the HOA to be pragmatic and efficient, but also to value community-building, in spite of the organizational inertia it brings.
